Entrecard: A Blogging Network

I don’t know how long I’ve been a member, but searching my blog using Entrecard as a keyword takes me to this post from August 2008 about Entrecard hopping.

What is Entrecard?

Entrecard is a blogging network that has so far helped me build traffic and network with other bloggers. I have found some interesting blogs that I would have probably not have found without their widget. The service also brings you readers and some would actually come out and participate. By this I mean that they would actually stop to read your posts, and if they find it interesting, would even leave you comments.

Why would you stick with Entrecard?

Unlike other traffic exchange systems, Entrecard is exclusively for blogs. Okay, maybe not strictly exclusive, because I’ve landed on some pages that are not blogs, but those are the exception.  You pretty much control the sites you visit too.

The Widget and how it works

You would know that a blogger is part of the Entrecard community, if you see her sporting the widget. Here’s an example:

When you sign up for Entrecard, the first thing that you should do, is to design your Ad or Business Card. This 125×125 (pixels) logo* works the way real-life business cards do. When you meet somebody and you would like to do business with them again, or you simply want to stay in touch, you exchange cards. Correct? In Entrecard, it works this way: on a member site you look for the Widget which is normally found above the fold (we’ll talk more about that later), then to let the member know that you’ve been by AND to earn credits, you “drop” your card on his widget. All you do is click on the Drop button. Of course, to see the Drop button, you must be logged on to the system. If not, you’ll see “Get one” instead.

Within the Entrecard site, users have an Inbox where they can see all the cards that have been dropped on them:

To return the visits, all you need to is click on their ECs, and drop on their widgets.

How can you have your EC on someone else’s widget?

You have to purchase a spot on the widget, just like purchasing ad space. Here though, you don’t need money to pay for the spot because transactions are done via credits. You earn one EC credit per drop you make. There was a time that you also earned one credit for each drop made on your widget but I think this was already discontinued.

Now, it doesn’t cost the same amount of credits to advertise across all sites in the network. This actually depends on how many ads are on queue for that blog (they call it 2 to the power of queue). When you start out, you have no ads displayed (except for EC ads that is) so it would only cost 2 ECs to purchase a 24 hour spot. The more spots reserved, the more expensive your spot goes. I think mine is currently at 128 ECs/day, others go for 2000!

The value of the ad spot is determined by how many click throughs you get. I feel that I don’t get as much ad requests because when someone places an ad on my widget, they don’t get much clicks to their sites. The EC Dashboard gives you statistics on that.

You can have control of the ads you want displayed on your widget, you could also set it to auto-approve if that’s what you want.

Can you make money on Entrecard?

Well, there was a time that you could make money directly on Entrecard. There was a shortlived cashout system in exchange for credits that you accumulate. I was waiting for a ten dollar cashout, but sadly, there wasn’t enough to go around and the program was cancelled without me receiving a single dollar. BUT, the traffic and the readers that EC brings to your blog could help you in your other money-making channels. 🙂

Sign up for Entrecard!

EC has gone through a lot of controversies and changes in the past six months. Some of these has caused the departure of some users. But I have chosen to stay. Other members have wrote extensively on the topic, so I won’t be talking about that.

In the end, Entrecard serves its main purpose of providing a system by which bloggers could connect and build traffic. It’s also quite easy to figure out 🙂

So there you go Joanne, I hope I finally explained Entrecard for you 🙂

*If you don’t know how to make one, there are text cards that are already available within the site that you just add your name to. If you ask nicely, I can make one for you 🙂

What Photo Editing Software do You use?

Before I go to what the title for this post is about, let me say thank you first to my Entrecard droppers. For January 2010, Jean Squared is back on my Top Ten, with drops for all 31 days of the month. Thank you so much! With her is CAP News and a come-back kid Wirez and Circuitz, hehe. I am off to drop ECs on your widgets, and place ads too. I wonder if I made it to anyone’s list? I probably didn’t 🙁

So I had posted before about trying out Picasa 3. I started a discussion over at myLot about photo editing software. It really opened my eyes to alternatives to the two software I use: Adobe Photoshop CS3 and PaintShopPro. Although it does seem like Photoshop gets a lot of votes, GIMP and Picasa are definitely holding up too. Then someone also mentioned Microsoft Paint.Net and now I also want to give that a try!

Now, would you be so kind as to check out the discussion and participate too? You would have to sign up for myLot to post a response, but it’s easy and you can earn off your participation too. 🙂 I ain’t just asking you to sign up so I can gain referrals, I really do want to find out what photo editing software you use and why you think it works best for you. 🙂

The decade in pictures: 2000

Here’s an interesting round-up of significant events from the past decade:

The decade in pictures: 2000

decade

Going through the gallery (I’m not actually done yet) has made me think about where I was at a particular time, and also made me wonder what things I’ve blogged about through the years. More importantly, it has made me curious to look further into some of the news stories they mentioned. I guess I won’t run out of blog topics this month. 😉

If I remember correctly (and am too lazy right now to check on my oldest blog), I only started blogging in 2002 or early 2003 so if I were to make a round-up of my own favorite posts for the decade, I’d be a couple years short.  But it sounds like a good project to me, and I will try to endeavor such a task. It will be a huge undertaking considering I’ve blogged in five different places and my bravejournal site doesn’t have very friendly archives. I will give it a try though.

Tracy also has quite an interesting round-up for her December 2009.

Got Heart Planner Giveaway

This Christmas season, I will be hosting my very first giveaway. 🙂

You know how ecstatic I was about getting my 2010 planner right? If I didn’t come across as excited when I wrote about it, surely my friends from the office could attest to that *chuckles.* Now I am aware that there are other Pinoy bloggers out there who are running contests to giveaway the coveted Starbucks planner, and there are many more who are collecting the stickers themselves (and emptying their pockets *grin*). So far be it for me to host another one of those. Besides, I don’t have the Gs to buy 13 cups of frappuccinos in order to complete the stickers before the month ends.

Without further ado, let me announce the star of this giveaway:

The 2010 Got Heart Planner is from Got Heart Foundation. Here’s a description from their Multiply website:

Featuring at least twelve indigenous communities in the Philippines, the paintings of an Obo Manobo, Retchor “Ettok” Umpan, and passages written by young indigenous peoples themselves, the GOT HEART 2010 PLANNER is both interactive and youthful with its numerous activities and amazing information. The Planner also has different activities that will allow you to discover more about our IPs in fun and light ways. Aside from promoting love of culture, the GOT HEART PLANNER proceeds will help fund the foundation’s projects for the indigenous peoples, specially a T’boli School in Cotabato.

I didn’t get much information about the foundation on their website, but I’m sure if you contact them in the channels they provided,  you can learn more about specific projects they are sponsoring. I intend to do that one of these days.

If you’ve followed my blog long enough, you would know about my preference for charities and causes concerning children and upholding their rights. But the causes of indigenous peoples are right up my alley too. My grandparents’ families hail from the mountain regions of the Cordilleras, from Bangaan, Sagada, Mt. Province to be exact. Although I don’t speak Igorot, I am one. [I already ordered one for my mom, by the way.]

This giveaway is open to anyone with an address in the Philippines. If you are from another country, you may still join and then maybe give the planner as a gift to a friend in the Philippines 🙂 I take care of both the gift, and the shipping. Isn’t that awesome? 🙂

The contest will run from today until after Christmas. I will draw a winner (via electronic raffle or old school raffle, I haven’t decided yet) on December 26. Since the people behind the planner do not ship on weekends and I assume they also don’t do that during holiday, please allow until the first week of January for shipping. 🙂

To join:

  • Simply leave comments on this blog post and earn one entry per comment.
  • Comments on any of my blog posts dating from December 7 until the 25th will also qualify as one entry per comment.
  • Blog about my giveaway and earn 5 entries, you also earn an additional entry when you leave the link to your post here (so there are six total points here).

Easy peasy, no? 🙂

Wedding invites

A friend is getting married on Thursday, I haven’t even thought about what I’ll be wearing to the event. Hmm…

This afternoon, our small group of friends will meet up, reminisce about the good old times, then look forward to her wedding and the rest of her married life.  The get-together was supposed to be last night, good thing it was moved because there was no way I could have been there.

Yesterday at work I started feeling woozy. My head was spinning while I was trying hard to coach one of my agents.  I normally stay at work way beyond my shift on Fridays so I can complete all my deliverables before my rest day. But yesterday? I tried to stay but was not very productive. I just decided to go home, rest and try to go back on Friday night. Besides, I owed some people their orders of truffles anyway.  Guess what happened when I got home? I went to sleep. I woke up several times just to complain of the wooziness and the headache and the back ache. I skipped lunch, the whole afternoon, and then dinner. No truffles, no Harry Potter, no going back to work.

That’s okay though.

Back to what’s happening this afternoon…

Arianne organized the event, I don’t know if I should call it a bridal shower but that’s what it probably is going to be. 🙂 I’m also not sure who else is coming, but I know it’s going to be a fun time. I haven’t seen the girls since August last year – almost a year since! Grabe. 🙂

Y’s wedding is the second that I’ll be attending just this month. In August, I’m seeing an old highschool friend tie the knot as well – she invited me just now via chat at Facebook.  Then next year it will be Jo’s wedding. Everyone else is asking when mine’s going to be. That is the million dollar question indeed.

It will yet be unanswered 🙂

I was hoping to help out with Jo as she prepares for her wedding. It’s more than six months away but she’s got reservations going already and I, on the other hand, have done nothing so far. Haha.

Speaking of weddings, I came across this website offering wedding invitation stamps.  They’re not just toy stamps mind you, these ones actually look like you could use them for postage of your wedding invitations.  It is US postage though. I guess here in the Philippines, wedding invitations are normally personally delivered to those invited so maybe this won’t be such a hit. But still, it’s tiny detail that would really add to personalizing a couple’s wedding invites. Check out this video I picked up from that site:

A couple could use any one of their beautiful pre-nup shots , diba? I wonder if business like this would fly in the Philippines, specially when snail mail traffic has declined with the advent of more affordable (and efficient) courier services, and email.  But since it’s a specialty stamp maybe Pinoys would go for it.  I wonder how this gets approved by PhilPost? Hmm…
