30 Years of UPSA at the CCP

Tonight was a night of beautiful music.

In the hours leading to the concert, I’d been hesitating to go, but only because I wasn’t seeing the show with my girlfriends and it was being held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines which would be a lucky hour away on Friday night traffic. But it’s been at least five years since I’ve seen the University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors in action, and having pledged as a lifetime fan of the group, how could I miss out on such a momentous event such as their 30th anniversary?

Besides, my colleague Ida was also in the show, and I’d told her even before she invited us that I was definitely going to be there.

The national anthem was being sung while I walked up the steps of the CCP. Leaving my Deena at the baggage counter wrapped up in my violet shawl took awhile because I was unwilling to leave her there. The few minutes of battling whether to leave her or have the boyfriend take her home cost me the seat with my colleagues. Because I was late, I had to sit at the back where it was freezing cold. Nice. My camera was snug and warm with my shawl wrapped around her, while I was shivering in cold!

But the music warmed my heart. My friend Pauie was in many of the numbers, and she again sang the solo (along with another alumna) for Light of a Million Mornings. Can’t help but feel proud of both her and Ida. My dad’s cousin is also with UPSA and he was on the show. Too bad I didn’t get to say hi after as the lobby scene was quite crazy already. Would have been nice to say hi to Carlo too, a friend we also met via Pauie and the UPSA.

I guess yesterday’s post was a bit inspired by the knowledge that I was going to see UPSA perform tonight. The UPSA experience, or the similar high of becoming part of a University-based group, or a cultural group, is something I also missed out on. Again, no regrets, because at the time there really were other things going for me. But if my future kids show even the slightest interest in learning to sing and being part of a choral group, I’d encourage them to join UPSA (assuming they get into UP in college of course). Talk about parents living vicariously through their kids. Haha. 🙂

Makahanap nga ng choir na pwede ko pang salihan ngayon… hmmm.. any ideas? 🙂

Anyway, here’s an old video of Pauie and the UPSA performing Light of a Million Mornings (previously posted here):

Glee: Journey Medley

I have a confession: I still haven’t seen Glee’s season finale. Today though, I did watch the Journey Medley that they did for Regionals.

I don’t understand why they didn’t win. 🙁

Yesterday, all over the news (and before I saw it on TV, I heard about it from Twitter) was suspected mastermind of the Ampatuan Massacre, former Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. He was being transferred (from prison) to a military hospital because of shingles or Herpes Zoster (I’m not sure, but I think it looks a lot like eczema). What they didn’t say is that the shingles is highly transmittable (airborne), so moving him is more about keeping the other prisoners safe from the disease than taking care of him. Haha.

MM: Glee – The Boy is Mine

Mercedes and Santana face off!

I’m confused, what happened to Quinn and Puck? I haven’t seen last week’s episode (I’m still waiting for the video to load) so maybe I’ll get a better idea then for what’s up with this song.

I’m kinda happy that Santana is getting more songs 🙂

Happy Music Monday! 🙂

MM: Glee – Physical!

As usual, last week’s Glee episode was a joy to watch, no wait, it was a hoot! 😉

I am waiting for Quinn to be redeemed, I mean, I’m really waiting for her to show her amazing attitude. For her to walk head high, and be happy with where she is. To be proud to be a young pregnant woman who chose to carry the baby instead of terminating the pregnancy. And it’s time she comes to terms with her relationship with Puck. He’s not so bad. 🙂 She’s smart, she’s got personality. I like her. hehe.

It’s amazing how Sue’s misfortune turned out to be her ticket to popularity, haha!

Glee: Home

I just saw the latest episode of Glee, just in time for the next one coming out Tuesday night. Though the title is Home and the sub-plots talk about finding your comfort zone, or keeping yourself grounded (once you find it, that is), to me it was more about Glee kids growing up.

Start with April Rose whose duets with Mr. Schue were just amazing. In the end, she realizes that she’s worth more than what she gives herself credit for. I hope that this time, she really sobers up. And that she comes back for more episodes once she truly cleans up her act.

There’s Finn who, after awhile, starts to understand what her mom is going through. He seems open to supporting her in what might finally make her happy. Of course, Kurt isn’t too happy about the budding relationship not between his dad and Finn’s mom, but between Finn and his dad. He feels as if Finn is the son that his dad never had. I don’t see it that way though. Kurt’s dad seems to be the most sensitive macho guy. He truly loves Kurt, and doesn’t mean to replace him with Finn.

Then there’s Quinn, who realizes something really important: that if she was willing to eat right for the sake of her baby, that she should do so for herself. She helps Mercedes realize that she shouldn’t allow someone else decide what she eats and how she feels about herself.

Beautiful was a very fitting choice for Mercedes’ solo.

Glee has so far really been sending the right messages. I love that, even though they are portraying these kids as wanting to fit in and be popular, they are emphasizing the truth that they can’t let others bring them down. They are beautiful not because they are popular, or that they are amazingly talented even. They are beautiful first because they believe themselves so.
