Pesos and Sense: The Social Cost of Investing

Filipinos are very social. Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino Psychology) identifies kapwa/pakikipagkapwa as our core value. This refers to community, togetherness. We hardly do things alone. Oh we do, but things make much more sense if we do them with others, or if the end result is for others.

That’s probably why Facebook is so popular in this country. They say 9 out of 10 Pinoys have a Facebook account. Not sure how accurate that is, I can’t find exact and accurate figures. FB allows us to keep tabs on our family and friends. Though we don’t even bother to text or call them offline, we can show our seeming concern over their affairs and well-being online. People I haven’t talked to or seen in 10 years are ‘speaking’ to me online.

But being social has its toll. When you see your friends posting photos of their latest gadgets, or photos of their recent getaways, you can’t help but WANT those things too. If you have a job, then you probably can afford it. But do you want to spend on those really?

Pesos and Sense featured this video in one of their episodes, and it was shown in yesterday’s seminar as well:

It’s true, deciding where to use your money can be a tough call. What are your priorities? What do you want for yourself?

Do I buy that g-l now and live my rockstar dream (even if just at home), or do I wait a few months or years? Am I good with my four pairs of shoes, or do I really need a red pair for that outfit I might wear at least once this year?

But the video also kinda makes it sound so boring. Can’t wise investors ever have fun? Can’t we have the good things in life right now as well? I think we can. It’s really just all a matter of planning.

Love is a Battlefield

Today is video day on Where the Moon Shines. Yes it is.

First up is a Pat Benatar video from the ‘80s, Love is a Battlefield. The movie 13 Going on 30 was on cable again this afternoon and I watched it, again. I also watched it last week when they showed it. I couldn’t NOT see it. Haha!

This song was a theme song for Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner). She and her 13-year old friends sang and danced to this video during their slumber party. It was seen on this scene here:

I realize that the movie probably isn’t for everybody, but I honestly liked it. I’m a nice person, see.

Now the second video for today is actually an Ikea vid I saw from Patty Laurel’s blog. It shows many options for maximizing small space. I need this. We need this!

Amazing isn’t it? But I must admit, it takes a lot of creativity to achieve this. I wouldn’t have thought of all those possible configurations on my own. And I doubt if I could still recreate it without the aid of a professional. Ugh. We need a room makeover. Or if we eventually move to our unit besides my brother at San Benissa, we definitely could make improvements there. This is definitely an inspiration.

Teamwork

We’re running a TL Development Training series at work and I’ve been attending additional classes this week that I will later on run. It’s such a nice break from all the work we’ve had to do all these months and being in training does a pretty awesome job of knocking some sense into my head on why I got into this job in the first place.

Anyway, the trainer showed us this video on Teamwork and I felt like I really wanted to share it. Cool video. Such a good and fun way to relate the message too.

Take photos and fit them in Digi Scrap Frames

Sharing a tutorial made by SuzyQ for effectively using digital frame/frame clusters. I actually never tried to do it this way. I’d usually just use the erase or the cut tool. This is much efficient, and clean!

I’ve recently added SuzyQ’s blog to my Reader and I’m glad I did. I never would have seen her tutorial if I hadn’t.

Tomorrow is World Photography Day! I wish I had known earlier so I could cook up something for The Newbie Photographer to commemorate the event. After shift tomorrow, I’ll make a list of things Alfred and I can do for WPD. That should be fun, here’s hoping I’ll have the energy to make something happen!

Stylus for iPad

Remember my LiveScribe post? So I’ve still been thinking about getting it. But now, the Bamboo Stylus for iPad has been thrown into the mix. As in maybe I should just get the stylus instead of the smart pen.

If you haven’t heard about it, let me introduce you to the Bamboo Stylus for iPad:

Getting a stylus means I’ll be using the iPad more often. It also means I wouldn’t have to buy the special notebooks for LiveScribe, nor will I need to refill ink. So yes, you bet this product got me thinking again.

Apparently, Wacom wasn’t the first company to come out with this product. Before this, there were Pogo and Targus. These pens are more affordable too.

Does anyone know if this is already available in the Philippines?
