Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People!
Received this in my inbox just a few minutes ago, and I would be more than happy to pass along the information 🙂

The sexual trafficking of children and young people is one of the most heinous crimes that exist in the world today. Let us support ECPAT-Philippines, and it’s partners, in their work to put an end to this. ECPAT also works with various organizations to give assistance for victim/survivors of child trafficking.
I worked with ECPAT as a youth volunteer for many many years. When I started to work (after college), my very first job was with one of its partner organizations, the Asia ACTs Against Child Trafficking. It’s wonderful to know that companies like The Body Shop are now supporting local groups in their advocacies. Head to your nearest TBS stores and make your purchase count towards the eradication of sex trafficking of women and children!

Once, I traveled on a bus from Manila to Samar. While some passengers were waiting for the bus to disembark from the ferry from Matnog, Sorsogon, I noticed a commotion. Yun pala, there were government agents in the area at may hinuhuli yatang smuggler ng mga kabaaan from Mindanao. Hot spot pala ang port sa Samar because that’s where buses from Mindanao and some parts of Visayas pass through.
I am a hundred per cent supporting this cause dahil kawawa talaga ang mga biktima nito.

Thanks and let’s spread the word!
When I was still part of Asia ACTs we were conducting trainers for community organizers regarding child trafficking. One leg was in Legaspi, and another was in Irosin. Some members of the LGU in Matnog were among our participants. Hopefully patuloy pa talaga sila sa pagbantay. We traced possible routes ng mga traffickers at ang common talaga na lumalabas, yung Samar to Matnog.

Such an awful problem. Parents need to talk to their kids, pay more attention to who they communicate with on line and on their phones. Monitor where they go with whom, limit when they can go. I think one of the biggest things parents could do is limit or remove cell phones. Keep kids busy with school activities and quality activities. They really don’t need to go out every night.
Parents need to stop trying to be a child’s best friend and be their parent. It’s a job, not a popularity contest.
How does raising money stop this? Not trying to be flip, I really am interested.

oophs click comment to soon, why has it worsened with the economic situation? If people have less money, aren’t kids home more?
They had a few specials on TV about this and talked about how kids leave the house at 10 on a school night to meet up with their friends after receiving a phone call; and parents weren’t stopping this, or questioning it as one of the biggest problems.

It’s a very complex situation really. There are both push and pull factors. The poverty that many families find themselves in push them to encourage even their kids to work to augment their income. Of course this doesn’t always mean they know what they’re kids are getting into. There are headhunters and illegal recruiters that mislead the families into thinking that the kids will be working in very good conditions.
Then there are times too that the children are abducted, such that there is absolutely no warning.
Sometimes, kids are lured by the promise of a better life, or even of simple pleasures, like a new cellphone perhaps, or nice clothes.
Here’s a website you may want to explore to know more about this phenomenon: http://www.asia-acts.org/website/index.php

Sorry, the money usually goes for materials raising awareness of the issue. The more people are organized to prevent this, the better chances we get. Money is also needed to train local officials, social workers and even local police to better handle this sensitive issue.
Then of course, it is also important that there are programs that will help in the recovery and healing process for victim/survivors of this situation. Most of them will need long term intervention so that they won’t go back to the cycle of abuse eventually. I hope I was able to explain it in a few words 🙂
