A Very Special Love
On Monday, I met Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro from the film A Very Special Love. It was a hoot! Alfred and I found so many reasons to laugh, and just enjoy the kilig moments the movie offered.
Laida’s character reminds me of Jane, played by Katherine Heigl in 27 dresses. Like Jane, Laida is selfless, and is head over heels for her boss. Laida is not obsessed with weddings though, but she is in perpetual good mood.
In college, Laida and her classmates had an interview with Miggy, a young scion of a prominent family. She was captivated by the man and has had a crush ever since. His pictures adorn her bedroom wall and she sought out to apply as an Editorial Assistant in his small publishing firm. As fate would have it, the publishing firm, Flippage, would be needing new people ASAP as the EIC and other staff had just resigned due to conflicts with the big boss. Laida gets hired on the spot, without so much as an interview.
On her first day at work, a group picture with Miggy is among the framed pictures that she puts atop her desk. She was ecstatic at having a work station with a good view of the man’s desk, albeit with a glass partition between them. Her co-workers are quick to bet that she wouldn’t last long in the job, and they give her fair warning. She refused to be daunted and encouraged them instead to believe in goodness.
That is Laida’s strength – her unwavering belief in the goodness of each person. She brings with her a spot of sunshine wherever she goes. She also seeks to cheer people up and treats each potential problem as a challenge. Unexpectedly, she does make things happen.
Her boss started to take notice when she started sticking notes to the coffee she brings him. Always when a little encouragement was needed.
Laida was instrumental in Miggy’s transformation – having been there to show him that we need to loosen up sometimes. Aside from the kilig love story that was of course played up in this movie, it also taught us that we shouldn’t dwell on the negative, specially not on the anger that we feel inside.
The movie’s special message that a special love doesn’t tire because it doesn’t ask to be returned rings true. But more importantly, we need to learn to recognize the love around us because they may be manifested in a way different from what we expected.
Hay. It was a feel good, kilig movie. Just for the laughs it brought that day, it’s a hit !

Oh, the movie has also added a few lines to our usual banter. Alfred tends to get easily upset and we’ve been having laughs just reminding each other not to let our temper ruin the day. Wag magpapadala sa galit!
