Be Kind to Yourself
I was doing some research for a new post for Between the Covers when this ad was played in YouTube:
How do we really see ourselves? I used to think I had a pretty healthy self image, but then I got more and more into photography and more and more people also got to toting cameras everywhere and I realized that I didn’t want photos of me taken.
Do you remember that shampoo commercial where the girl would hide behind her friends because her hair was less than lustrous? Or those series of commercials for Lesofat, tinatago ang taba? That’s exactly what I do. I don’t hide behind people though, I normally just take myself out of the photo. I refuse to have any taken. Most of the time.
But I’ve tried to do that less and less. I’ve allowed others to take my photo. I’ve even started taking selfies. And my profile photo on social networking sites is already an actual photo of myself. I am beautiful in whatever shape or size, I know that. I may be trying to lose weight these days, but that is because I have become too heavy for my bones (being bionic now doesn’t guarantee that another slip disc won’t happen). Let that not overshadow the truth that I am beautiful. \
Thanks Dove for reminding women of all shapes and sizes, that we need to be kinder to ourselves.

Inner beauty matters more than what is on the outside. A heavy weight can be remedied with a change of lifestyle and exercise. Character takes years to be honed. But of course, I’d like to have both sana 🙂

I’m glad Dove is being consistent with their “real beauty” campaign. It’s amazing how people see themselves and how others perceive them. We’re all guilty at point of looking down at ourselves, we need to see beyond what the mirror shows us or what others have told us and be appreciative of what we have now. Here’s to more selfie photos! 🙂

i used to be self-conscious too (too skinny, too hairy, etc). when i started taking good care of myself, i gained a new-found confidence. i guess it starts within us… the self-acceptance. then it radiates outwards.

I love your post! I have always been self-conscious-i am sooo big, does my tummy stick out, is my nose too small. I guess we Filipinos are raised being mahiyain. When somebody says, uyy ang ganda mo ngayon, our answer-di naman… Eto ang matindi-we tend to greet each other with-“uyy, tumaba ka. what happened?”

Yes dear, true beauty comes from within. A friend of mine mentioned before na a woman full of wisdom appears to be more sexy and beautiful as compared to those who are really physically beautiful. Why? because they can carry themselves well and they ca speak with authority, may sense at hindi boring. Mix these people in a crowd and they’ll surely stand out.
Cheers to that! 🙂

I think I’m doing the same now sis, I’m taking myself out of the picture because I gained too much weight. Unlike before na slim pa ako always present sa pictures. The video reminds me to love myself no matter what.

I read somewhere that we must include ourselves in photos because that’s where our children would see us, and that’s how memories are kept. If we’re not in the picture, how can we relive the feeling we had the day it was captured? When we see ourselves, we need to see us happy, smiling, and do away with the negative observations like how frumpy I looked.

I really love Dove. Almost all my bathroom essentials are Dove products. Their ads are always very touching.

If I may borrow lines from Lady Gaga’s Born this Way.. “You’re beautiful in your way, cause God makes no mistake”. We really just need to appreciate ourselves to be beautiful.

Love their products too. They recently also released an ad showing that their deodorant is parabens free. that’s good news!

Very true indeed, you are beautiful! We are all beautiful…it is a nice way that you are enjoying life because that is what God wants us to do…be happy with ourselves but also take care of it. I too should start losing weight for health reasons.
