Typhoon Juan

Around this time last year, the world’s attention was towards the Philippines as we survived typhoons Parma and Ketsana (local names Pepeng andOndoy). We survived, but not without a lot of casualties – of both lives and properties. My family was among those affected, our homes were flooded and we were forever marred by the experience. Yet we’re still one of the lucky ones. We still had our homes, and each other. We just had to live through the nightmare, and then do the rigorous cleanup that lasted until a few weeks after the storms have already died down and left.

Today, super typhoon Juan (international name Megi) is raging through Northern Luzon, affecting the whole island as it seems. The center is many hours away from the Metro, yet we still feel it. The rain is pouring heavily as I type this. All over the news, the disaster coordinating councils in the localities and even on the national level are confident that we are more prepared now than we were last year. There are rubber boats and life vests, and basic rescue tools made available. Preemptive evacuation was done although there were still a lot of locals who stubbornly chose to stay home. I pray for their safety.

Still, there will be landslides, rivers and creeks will spill over. There are also reports of a few lives lost since Juan made landfall.

Let’s us all take care. Whether you’re up North where the rain and winds are stronger than what we’re getting here, or if you’re in Metro Manila thinking whether traffic will be bad due to flooded roads, take care.

Christmas Wish List

Indeed, it is that time of the year again. They say Pinoys celebrate Christmas the longest. As soon, as the ‘Ber’ months start rolling in, you’d hear Christmas carols played in malls or over the radio. Decorations start getting sold, trees go up in some houses and establishments. And, for the young and old alike, wish lists are made and revisited several times until the season ends.

What’s on my list? Let’s just talk about the material here, none of those wishes for world peace, good health and all that. Just a personal wish list for gifts. Smile Either a Fuji Instax, or a Polaroid printer. A TLR, the Gakkenflex maybe, for more lomo love. A new pair of trainers, for when I’d go to the gym, or for walking (the Adidas Fluid or Bounce, or whatever, seem good choices). A Fossil purse/wallet to replace my huge wallet that’s falling apart after a year or so of abuse. The Tinkerbell flats from Melissa (although I just bought the Little Prince pumps so I can’t really spend for this one, if it’s a present though then why not). I’m sure there are a couple of things I’ve forgotten.

gakkenflexinstax

On the boyfriend’s list, he has a new pair of rubber shoes too, and it’s most definitely going to be an Adidas. He also wants another pair of shoes from Vans. Then there’s the SB600 Nikkor flash that he’s been pining for. Wait, is this really it? I swear his list was longer! Oh well.

What’s missing from both our lists are anything computer or gadget related. No upgrades for the PC, a replacement laptop, nor netbooks. I find it ironic too. Now that such things are made more affordable, we don’t want them. There was a time when we’d always talk about needing upgrades for the PC, or getting a netbook for mobile computing. The iPad serves what we would normally want a netbook for. And the PC at home is close to the ideal that we want (well as close as current budgets would allow) so we’re not wanting in that department. Smile

I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about the boyfriend promising to take care of more than one item on my list this year. I should be happy that I’d be getting the gifts I want. But part of me feels that he shouldn’t be spending his money on those, I’d rather we save up what little extra money we have. But then again, why would I stop him from showering me with gifts? Basta he shouldn’t expect me to spend a lot of money on his gifts! Haha! I’ll save for the two of us Winking smile

What about you, what’s on your list this Christmas?

Versatile Vera :)

Thank you so much to versatile mom and blogger, Ivy of Spinning Lovely Days for hitting me up with this blog award:

Me, a versatile blogger? Well, it’s really more of a scatter-brained blogger. How else can you explain incoherent posts jammed with sometimes unrelated topics? Hehe. But versatile is what we all want to be I guess. Throw me into any situation and I should be able to adapt, blend and in, and even maybe shine. 🙂 To keep an interesting blog (even when it’s really just a personal journal like what Where the Moon Shines is), one must also be versatile. I hope I really have been able to show that by writing on a variety of topics. It also means being taking notes and photos of things I fancy so I can remember to post about them at a later time (something I haven’t been able to do properly, because as I mentioned earlier, I’m a scatter-brain!). Or researching on topics so I can talk about them without looking stupid, like what do I really have to know in order to post about rating cigars? I mean, that one’s bound to be extra difficult because I don’t smoke cigars. I don’t smoke.

Now, as a recipient of this award, I should share seven (7) things about myself. This is no easy feat, I have to think about 7 things that I possibly have not mentioned in my years of blogging. Let’s see…

  1. I attended a writing workshop held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in the summer before sixth grade. I loved all two days of that workshop (or did we actually spend four days there?). The first part was a poetry writing workshop, and the second, was on story-writing. It was awesome being around creative minds. For awhile I was intimidated because they all seemed a lot better than I was, but no one was bragging really. And there was no competition. I only wish I could find a copy of whatever it was I wrote during that time.
  2. Attending the workshop was my teacher’s idea. I mentioned her in my teacher’s day remembrance post. Our school paper adviser. She told me about the workshop before the school year ended but I never turned in any of the stuff I wrote. One has to qualify for the workshop, see. So one summer afternoon, while I was out at the SambaLikhaan with friends (playing!), someone came to tell me I had to go home because my teacher was there. Uh oh. She asked for my sample work. I rushed up to my room, rewrote a few poems onto clean bond paper and handed in the application form. I don’t think I got to thank her for coming over and making sure I would get into that workshop. Thank you Ma’am!
  3. In sixth grade, I wanted to quit the school paper as my club. Okay, not really quit, but I wanted to join the glee club that year instead. I like writing, but I liked singing too. And I can’t be in both clubs since each student could only be in one. So I told the adviser, and she completely disagreed with me. She talked me through the decision, and she told me she was leaving the country. She’d wanted me to stick it out because she was leaving. In short, she made me feel that I was important for the paper. Hay.
  4. To get into the paper, students are invited to join a writing workshop with real journalist as resource person. There we learned about writing for a paper and all that. At the end of it all, we’d turn in some work, and the resource person and advisers would deliberate on who makes it into the editorial team. Rumor has it that on my first year in the club, fourth grade, I would have been given an associate ed post but those posts are reserved for 5th and 6th graders. I was editor-in-chief on my last year. The training we had for the grade school paper was something I missed for the high school paper that I was part of only on my senior year. To be honest, we were all at a loss when we joined in. None of us seniors had been part of the paper before then. And there was no writing workshop. It was as if we were all just supposed to know what to do, automatically. I hope it’s not like that for them anymore.
  5. Hmm what else should I share? I’m running out of ideas… Ah! I moved to a different school for high school. My dad and I went around to a number of schools near our area, most of which are exclusive for girls, Catholic schools. I remember being shocked at the tuition fee rates everywhere we went. Though I wasn’t asked to consider the cost at all, I think it still influenced my eventual choice.
  6. I was supposed to move to a  science high school for sophomore year. I took the entrance exam, and passed. There were only 8 slots for that year. This is a special school and my brother attended it on his freshman year. I wanted to go there, there’s pride and getting in. But just a few days before school was supposed to start, I chickened out. So though I had begun to tell my classmates that I wasn’t going to see them that year, I surprised them by showing up on the first day of school. My mom, who was on a trip when I changed my mind, came home and wasn’t happy about it (she got over it easily though). My brother said that I should have pushed through with it, I’d get a better chance at getting into UP or Ateneo when time came. My rebound was that he didn’t even stay there for long. That was his mistake, he said.
  7. For college, I was accepted at all the schools I applied for (even if I didn’t move to the science high:)). Of course, there was no question about choosing UP above the others. But then a few days before registration, I almost chickened out again. None of my friends and classmates were going to UP. I was going to be on my own. My bestfriend was going to Mapua and I seriously considered just going there instead. Tuition wasn’t a question, my parents took out a college plan for me. My mom was supportive when I told her about my doubts. In the end, I just couldn’t picture myself as an engineer. Could you imagine me being an electronics and communications engineer? Well I couldn’t. Haha.

Whew. Are you still with me? Give yourself a pat on the back if you’re still reading 🙂

So of course I’m going to pass on this award to other Versatile bloggers; before I do, here’s a reminder of the rules 🙂

Not sure if we’re getting new clothes this Christmas. Going back to Faye’s Giveaway, be sure to check it out for yourself and join up! Don’t get your hopes up too high for first prize though, that’s going to be mine! 🙂

World Class Advertising on a Blogger’s Budget

So goes the tagline of the popular advertising network for bloggers, Adgitize.

I’ve been part of this network for quite a while now, over a year really. My member profile doesn’t say when I signed up, but it must have been no later than March last year, 2009. I’ve received payouts consistently since I started advertising too and that’s always an email I look forward to getting each month 🙂

How does Adgitize work?

Bloggers can sign up as a Publisher to display ads on their websites. To be a ‘Publisher’ means to have at least one Adgitize group posted on your blog, and to have it viewed at least once a day. You accumulate points in this network, and publishing a post per day guarantees a regular accumulation of points. Visiting other blogs in the network by clicking on ads on your site plus the sites you visit also gets you points.

The more points you earn, the more equivalent moolah you get. 🙂

But things get more interesting when you sign up as an Advertiser too. You just need a 125×125 badge (I can make you one if you sign up through this link), pay the advertising fee, and  your badge/ad will be displayed across the network of blogs. Because the Adgitize culture encourages visiting bloggers by clicking through the ads, this guarantees you more traffic, and more points. 🙂

I personally go for the monthly ads that cost $14. That’s a considerable amount, but I have proven time and again that as long as I blog regularly, it is money that I get back. Sometimes, I even place two ads in a month to promote traffic for my other blogs as well. Each month, I’d typically get anywhere between 11 to 14 dollars from Adgitize payout. I use that same money to place the ad for the following month. If I only get 11 dollars that month, that just means I paid 3 dollars for advertising that would have cost more from other ad providers.

Another awesome thing about Adgitize is how the founder/owner of the network interacts with the publishers and advertisers. Ken Brown personally emails the members and responds to our queries. I understand that he’s had to hire some staff as the network has grown, but he’s still pretty hands on.

In fact, I just exchanged emails with him tonight. I received this happy news from him, you see:

Hi Vera,

Congratulations. You have sponsored the most new member advertisers for the week of October 3 through October 9th. You are the winner and you win the $15 winning prize for the week. Plus, since we didn’t have any winners from last week you win an additional $15 from last week. You will receive an email shortly from PayPal with your winning amount of $30.00 USD.

Thank you for being an Adgitize Member affiliate and sponsoring new advertisers into the Adgitize Ad Network.

For more information about the promotion check out this article on the Adgitize Blog, http://www.adgitize.com/blog/default.aspx/28/Adgitize-Affiliate-Promotion-for-October-2010.

Ken Brown
Adgitize

How’s that for good news, huh? 🙂

Thank you so much to Zoan for deciding to sign up with Adgitize last week by using my affiliate link! Without you, this winning would not have been possible. So I will gladly share the blessing with you (but not so much okay? lol) 🙂

If you’re a blogger and you haven’t advertised with Adgitize yet, well what are you waiting for?
