A Statement of the ECP Council of Bishops seeking the release of the Morong 43

I’d like to share a statement released by our Council of Bishops regarding the Morong 43. I think my mom drafted this 🙂

Freedom for the 43 Health Workers

A month ago, some 300 elements of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police forcibly took into custody forty-three health workers from the rest house of Dr. Melecia Velmonte, a renowned and respected infectious disease specialist, a consultant at the Philippine General Hospital and a professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. For a few days, they were denied visits of relatives and friends until after the intervention of the Commission on Human Rights. It is our understanding that the group was at the resort attending a health skills training sponsored by the Council for Health and Development (CHD), a non-government organization. Most of the participants were members of the CHD and of the Community Medicine Development Foundation (Commed), also a non-government organization. Amongst those arrested, we are specifically concerned over the conditions of Dr. Alex Montes, a member of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and a former coordinator of their health ministries, and of Ms. Angela Dolorico, an Episcopalian who hails from Sagada, Mountain Province where most of our congregations are.

While the legality of their arrest is now being questioned in court, the 43 health workers have alleged that they have been abused physically and mentally and their basic rights deprived of them. We are aware that the Commission on Human Rights has intervened and has scheduled a hearing on these allegations on March 18th. We are also aware, however, of how the poor and the marginalized have long suffered from the lack of accessible health care services. It is non-government organizations that have filled-in this gap and who have engaged in the training of community health workers who work directly with communities in providing health education and care in far-flung communities or even in urban poor communities.

Health care and healing, which is the main concern of those in any form of medical practice, is a service that Jesus Christ Himself performed. It was, in a sense, a constant part of his teaching and preaching. In most cases, when we speak of miracles, it is usually in reference to an incident or occasion where healing is performed on one who had been regarded to be inflicted with an incurable disease. In fact, healing is one of the first services that the Episcopal Church established when it started its mission in the Philippines.

But the church’s concern goes beyond the healing of the sick and of those in discomfort. Jeremiah 33:6 says “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.”(NIV) Indeed, here are the 43 health workers now themselves in a situation that requires healing – the healing of a nation that continues to allow the desecration of the rights of its people.

It is for this reason what we appeal to the authorities for the immediate release of these health workers. There is no place for injustice in any society, especially when such injustice is inflicted on those who seek to serve the least of our brethren.

Beware of Heat Stroke!

It has been very hot and humid day and night and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. I have had to live with a nagging headache and I feel the heat up right on top of my head everytime. Even while I’m in the shower, specially when the water’s not running while I shampoo or soap up. I know that everyone else all over the country and in many parts of the world are suffering through the same heat, or even worse, and I shouldn’t be complaining. I try not to, but it’s just awful.

I even skipped work last night because I wasn’t (still don’t) feeling well. That’s also why there’s been a lack of posts around here, I just can’t sit still in front of the computer long enough to string words together and build a post.

So how do you know if you’re having heat stroke? They say it’s a lot like a heart attack too. I got this from MedicineNet.Com:

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • headache
  • muscle cramps and aches, and
  • dizziness

However, some individuals can develop symptoms of heat stroke suddenly and rapidly without warning.

Different people may have different symptoms and signs of heat stroke. But common symptoms and signs of heat stroke include:

  • high body temperature
  • the absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin
  • rapid pulse
  • difficulty breathing
  • strange behavior
  • hallucinations
  • confusion
  • agitation
  • disorientation
  • seizure
  • coma

Sometimes a person experiences symptoms of heat exhaustion before progressing to heat strokes. Do I think my headaches are a sign of heat exhaustion? They could be, but I hope not. I was planning on seeing a doctor today but I was up early and was sleepy again, only to wake up at lunch. Now it’s too hot again. Not sure if I’ll still go…

So folks, keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water and fruit juices. Stay away from coffee and soda (oh no, stay away from ice cold Coke?!). If you think you’re having a heat stroke, see a doctor!

Shopping for Bags

Sorry, I’m not over my bag craziness just yet 🙂

I blame our client/guest for getting me bag crazy again, lol. Well no it’s not her fault really. Just before they arrived I had already seen this Coach bag that I so want to own. It’s an original and over 200 dollars. 🙁 So anyway, I happened to notice the client’s bag, it was Coach and surely it was an original so I commented on it. That’s how we learned that we both had a thing for bags, and the trip to Greenhills that weekend was sealed.

Apart from buying pearls, she got bags and boy was she able to get a good bargain. She commented that she doesn’t want to use her bags here anymore because people would think it’s not an original. I think she was shocked that there were so many replicas available, and good quality ones too. I saw several ones that I really liked. I think the bags at Greenhills have moved up a notch. They’re knockoffs but if they just remove the brand and sell them as their own brands, I’d love to buy. What I mean is that I’m not for the brand but rather the look and the feel of the bag. There’s this particularly simple leather tote that I really wanted but I was surprised that they were selling it for over a hundred dollars. I would do a double take for a knockoff that costs 5k. I saw the original Chanel in the Michka stall in the Promenade Mall and it costs a hundred thousand pesos if I remember correctly! You know what? The knockoff version actually looked better. But I still don’t want to spend that much money on the knockoff Chanel.

I’d rather spend my money on an Epiphanie.  🙂

I’m full…

My phone’s memory has been saying that a lot lately. I’m not sure exactly how big, but 8mp pictures take up a lot of space and my phone’s built in storage just can’t handle more of them. I keep on deleting older photos but I just can’t say goodbye to all of them, eventhough I’d already copied them onto my PC hard drive. The solution, I know, is to get a micro sd to expand the storage capacity. I just keep forgetting to buy one. Tsk.

Apart from my phone complaining, today my tummy complained twice too – I’m too full! First while having a meal with the SME’s and Boden (the core SMEs went to Mister Kebab and they got us Keema with eggplant and rice with butter!). Just as I was finihing up, I felt like I couldn’t eat another bite! Lol.

Second time was over our late lunch at Savory in Greenhills. I didn’t eat all the rice I had just so I could finish my chicken and have another crispy stuffed shrimp. As if I didn’t feel heavy enough, I sipped on the juice drink they sent us home with, toinks. By the time we had checked out all the beautiful bags, I could feel liquid going around my tummy while I walked! Haha.

Speaking of bags, I spied two bags that I really liked. One was too expensive but really classy, the other was in violet and could be used as a camera bag without the special partitions. I exercised restraint just like our guest did today, and walked away…

But I’m still dreaming of getting an Epiphanie Bag

Epiphanie Bags

I am surprised that I have not mentioned these bags before here.

Ginger (click the picture and check her out at their shop)

I found them awhile bag, ugh back, through Shutter Sisters, if I remember correctly. Epiphanie Bags is a line of camera bags with women in mind. Women like me who would rather have all her things in one bag with her camera than tote a separate bulky camera bag. 🙂

They’re not cheap though. Definitely not. But I still want one. I would definitely spend for either one of them over a genuine Coach bag; and an Epiphanie bag costs less too!

Problem is, I don’t want to spend that much money now. So I’ll wait. What for I’m not sure. I have enough on my Paypal to cover one bag actually… Another problem is that I’m not sure if they would be delivered without customs charging me an enormous fee, you know? That’s the hazard of ordering in from the US 🙁 I could have it delivered to a friend or relative in the US again and wait until there’s a chance to have it shipped here but I haven’t really thought about it that much…

Really, I haven’t.

Sheesh, I really want an Epiphanie Bag. Or a Jill-E, but I’ll talk about that other line more some other time…
