Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center – Part 2

(Read the first part of this series on our Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife experience here)

Apart from being a park where families can go to relax, unwind, have a picnic and enjoy nature in the middle of a bustling city, the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife is also a Nature Center.  What this means is that rescued animals are nursed here until they can be set free again.  For those who can no longer be brought back to their natural habitat, they stay in the center and those are the animals that people like us can visit.

I have memories of entering an aviary as a young girl.  A big one where you can see the birds flying around you.  I still can’t be quite sure if this is a memory from a trip to the Wildlife or to Nayong Pilipino ( is there an aviary there?).  I don’t know how many species of birds can be found at the Wildlife, I can’t even name the birds that we were able to see.  The cages are not properly labeled you see.

I was quite frustrated though that the cages completely ruin your chances of a good shot.  The animals are in cages, then there are railings that keep you more than an arm’s length away from the cage itself.  For a frustrated photographer like me, there’s just too many challenges to think of. Haha 🙂 Nevertheless, blogging about our day at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife will not be complete without showing photos of the animals we were there to see.

Sheesh please do not ask me what these birds are called. I’d just tell you that they look like African lovebirds to me. You don’t agree? Well here they are kissing!

There you go, kissing scandal at Cage 27.  See, no labels at all to tell you what you’re looking at!  So even if I wanted to educate Esban on what birds these are, I couldn’t!

According to the boyfriend (who wanted to become a veterinarian, if not for his fear of blood), the birds on this next set are sea hawks.  The last one I’m sure is a hornbill. Or something. 🙂

Now this majestic peacock was kind enough to hold his pose for me.  But what caught our attention more than his magnificent stance and the beauty of his feathers, was the fact that he shares his cage with turtles.  Ya don’t believe me? Well see for yourself! We even photographed one turtle struggling to get out of his water bath 🙂

Didja see it? 😉

Stay tuned for Part 3 🙂

Movie Mondays

Monday was again a day for watching movies.  It started with a Filipino film entitled Bagong Buwan (New Moon).  I blogged about the movie two years ago, specifically about their exchange about the one-legged soldier.  Here’s an excerpt of what I said then, which is very much still true for how I feel:

Got me to thinking, is that really what it has to come to? That everyone has to die from war, before it ends? I don’t really know what the situation in Mindanao is at this time. I know it isn’t as chaotic as when there was an all-out war declared six to seven years ago. But the rift between Filipino Muslims and Christians is still there. And the wounds of war still have not healed.

No. No child should ever have to join a rebellion. For all children deserve a chance for a peaceful life. They should not have to give up their childhood in exchange for armaments.

But I know that the world isn’t hard-wired to always give children what they need. Many kids grow up deprived of the simplest of things. Many children lose their parents to the war. Many see the injustice around them, and it pushes them to take to arms. What can we do for them?

What can I do?

The next three movies are courtesy of Star Movies.  First up was one I hadn’t seen before. It stars Mandy Moore, Diane Keaton, Tom Everett Scott, Lauren Graham and others.  It’s called Because I Said So.  It was a bit predictable, but it got me hooked. 🙂

I liked seeing the dynamics between the mother and her daughters.  My mom and I are just not like that, and it’s okay 🙂  As for the whole dating dilemma, I’ve never had to go through that phase and it was interesting to watch too.  I love that Milly was a caterer, and that she loves baking – something I would love to do for a living, hehe.  I didn’t care much about Jason – I knew for sure it was Johnny who’d win.

Next up was Dark Matter starring Meryl Streep, Liu Ye, and Aidan Quinn.

It tackles school politics and how it affects a bright and passionate young scientist, whose chances of getting his PhD and even possibly the Nobel prize was snatched away from him. All because his dissertation puts to shame his mentor/advisor.  I’m sure these things happen in real life too, I hope though never to hear of such a case happening in our own universities.  It had such a violent ending. What a waste of talent.

This last movie caused me Monday’s episode of Boys Over Flowers: It’s a Boy Girl Thing.  To be honest, I didn’t find it to be a particularly good movie, also quite predictable, and the acting wasn’t really all there.  I am known to keep on watching movies that I’ve already seen before, but this one would be an exception.

its_a_boy_girl_thingWoody and Nel are next-door neighbors but it’s like they’re from different worlds. They don’t get along at all.  I like the fact though that they didn’t center on the differences between genders, but rather on the invisible social lines between them – this is probably the single redeeming value of the film.

What movies have you watched lately?

Thank You to May Top EC Droppers!

What a better way to start of the month of June, than to pay tribute to my top Entrecard droppers for the month of May.

Thank you so much for dropping, and I hope that you sometimes read through as well 🙂

It’s interesting how there are only two droppers here on this list who were also in April’s list: Jean Squared and Wirez and Circuitz.  I wonder if I even made it to anyone’s list? I’m not much of a regular dropper, I normally just return drops and sometimes it’s different each day.  My EC dropping is as inconsistent as my yo-yo dieting, haha.  I see some people have their own Entrecard drop lists that help them drop consistently.  Maybe I should make one too, so I can also consistently follow EC blogs I actually like.  As for my yoyo dieting, well maybe it’s time to review top rated diet pills and pick one brand. If only they weren’t so expensive, and if a trusted doctor can guarantee it’s safety.

The Hunt for Gollum

I was browsing through the Entrecard and Adgitize networks this morning when I got a link to the free independent online movie, The Hunt for Gollum.  I just watched it tonight, and I’m sure LOTR fans (books and movies) would enjoy seeing it too. Here’s a trailer (which can also be viewed in HD):

If you have 40 minutes to spare though, you might want to watch the full movie. It is not made for profit so sharing it here is perfectly legal. According to the Hunt for Gollum website, the movie was made by enthusiast film makers who are all LOTR fans, and they made no profit by filming this project. I think it turned out well, and though you can’t help but think of Viggo Mortensen the whole time, the actor in this one didn’t do a bad job naman. 🙂

I have so many stories to share, starting with completing my Parks & Wildlife series and then moving on to our Baler vacation.  I’m lazy to do either.  In fact, I was too lazy to go malling today. Alfred’s out with his former team from NCO, having a blast at a resort somewhere in Montalban. As for me? I slept through the afternoon (though I didn’t intend to).

Anyhoo, you can watch the full HD movie, The Hunt for Gollum right after the jump (the screen’s too big for my blog layout, so pardon the misalignment:)

No longer MIA

I just got back from a trip to Baler, Aurora.

I had planned to set up scheduled posting for the past two days but didn’t have time to make them. We didn’t bring any laptop with us to Baler, and we didn’t make any efforts to find an Internet cafe. So I apologize for a few days of silence, and for not returning your visits. Thanks for coming back 🙂

Maxine’s battery ran out this afternoon, right after I took a group photo of everyon with us on the trip. I got a scare just awhile ago because when I checked the new folder I created for our Baler trip, it was empty! WHen I transfer photos, I always tick off the option to delete original from the disk, so I rushed to check if the SD card was already empty. Thank God it was not! I’ll leave transferring the photos for tomorrow. Maybe I’m just super sleepy.

I forgot to call the dermatologist’s clinic to setup an appointment for Monday afternoon. Argghh!!! No, I won’t be going in for a facial, much less an acne treatment.  I consulted the doc for a dewarting session and I was so suprised that the quote given to me was approved (in part) by the HMO!  De-warting c/o Medicard (okay, just 75% of the cost, but that’s good enough for me).

Anyhoo, regular posting will be back Saturday. 🙂
