Ramblings and Brain farts

Typhoon Juan

Around this time last year, the world’s attention was towards the Philippines as we survived typhoons Parma and Ketsana (local names Pepeng andOndoy). We survived, but not without a lot of casualties – of both lives and properties. My family was among those affected, our homes were flooded and we were forever marred by the experience. Yet we’re still one of the lucky ones. We still had our homes, and each other. We just had to live through the nightmare, and then do the rigorous cleanup that lasted until a few weeks after the storms have already died down and left.

Today, super typhoon Juan (international name Megi) is raging through Northern Luzon, affecting the whole island as it seems. The center is many hours away from the Metro, yet we still feel it. The rain is pouring heavily as I type this. All over the news, the disaster coordinating councils in the localities and even on the national level are confident that we are more prepared now than we were last year. There are rubber boats and life vests, and basic rescue tools made available. Preemptive evacuation was done although there were still a lot of locals who stubbornly chose to stay home. I pray for their safety.

Still, there will be landslides, rivers and creeks will spill over. There are also reports of a few lives lost since Juan made landfall.

Let’s us all take care. Whether you’re up North where the rain and winds are stronger than what we’re getting here, or if you’re in Metro Manila thinking whether traffic will be bad due to flooded roads, take care.

Afternoon Nap

That’s why I’ve been offline for the most part of this week. I’d been getting too-long naps in the afternoon. It all started on Tuesday, after a session at the gym. Yes, I’ve been to the gym twice this week. But that’s a story for a whole other blog (yes, I’ve got some material for my new blog that’s taking eons to launch!).

Anyhoo… The world celebrated Teachers’ Day a few days ago and I just wanted to shout out that I have had some amazing teachers in my student life. They have all (mostly) enriched my life, and encouraged me to continue wondering and discovering the world around me. Although I can’t say I have a favorite teacher, some of them just stand out in my mind as I write this. She wasn’t my teacher in any class (not that I can remember), but she was the adviser for our grade school paper. She taught me a lot, and when she left us, and later when I moved up to highschool, I missed her. YTV was not quite the same after she left.

In highschool… wala lang ako maisip ngayon, but I had some awesome teachers too. A lot of them really cared for their students. At the UP, who could ever forget one of the pillars of the Psych Dept? I remembered him on this post when he passed on. There were other professors from other colleges and departments too. Ones who really challenged me to think out of the box, and challenge my own beliefs. Most of them were very encouraging.

Before I left UP, I had wondered about writing each of my former professors a note to say thank you. I never got around to it, but someday, I still might do it. Teaching isn’t a lucrative career, but I can see how it can be the most rewarding.

Kudos to all the Teachers of the world! Keep on inspiring young minds and leading the way for a brighter tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™‚

Re-runs, shopping, and Oreo Truffles

I donโ€™t remember how many times Iโ€™ve seen it, maybe at least three or four times, yet when I saw it on cable yesterday I just could not walk away from Reese Witherspoon on Sweet Home Alabama. I just love watching that movie.

Itโ€™s the same way with A Knightโ€™s Tale. Iโ€™d seen it so many times that I know exactly what will happen in most scenes. Yet when I see it on TV, I drop everything to watch. Well, okay, maybe not everything. But I do watch.

What is it with me and watching movies over and over and over again? Oh well. Itโ€™s my time Iโ€™m wasting anywayโ€ฆ

October is gearing up to be a wonderful month. We opened it by doing some shopping! Haha. SmileI had not been to the Megamall in quite a while (possibly in a year!) so I was itching to go checkout the new stores, specifically Forever 21 and Payless. I had no intention to shop really, I just wanted to checkout the merchandise. Well, we shopped anyway. (Pictures to be added tomorrow).ย I got these fashion earrings (there’s another pair that the boyfriend and I agreed on, but I’d save that for another day of shopping):

A scarf like this one, but of a solid purplish gray color:

And this black ribbed knit skirt:

I kept telling the boyfriend that it would look good with the pair of plain boots/wedges also from Forever 21, but he wouldn’t hear any of it! Haha ๐Ÿ™‚ I couldn’t find a photo of it from their website, but Alfred also picked up a nice knit sweater for himself. He shopped too! ๐Ÿ™‚

There was this particular pair of Comfort Shoes Plus flats at Payless that I contemplated on getting. It has a 945 pesos price tag (just right) and it was very comfortable and would have been sensible shoes to wear for work AND shopping. But I decided against buying it.

I donโ€™t regret that decision, specially since seeing the uber comfy ballet flats from Gap. They donโ€™t look anything special really, Iโ€™d probably have passed them without so much as a second look if I wasnโ€™t already looking for them. Celebrity Mom Pia Magalona tweeted a few months ago about finding the most comfortable flats at Gap and Iโ€™d just been curious since then.

So I tried on a pair, and immediately understood why. It felt like walking on carpeted flooring, but with the assurance that you can use it on a real road too. Itโ€™s foldable and even comes in its own little tote. I want one. The only downside is the huge price tag. Itโ€™s hard to justify the expense. Thereโ€™s this other pair of shoes thatโ€™s in the same price range that Iโ€™m eyeing to buy from an online seller thatโ€™s well known for her very stylish shoes. This other one is a pair of high-heeled pumps with embellishments (sparkly). I can totally use that at work, or hopefully even to the next wedding Iโ€™m attending. Although Iโ€™m still reluctant in shelling out the cash for it, it feels more justifiable to spend such an amount on those, than on the Gap flats. Sigh.

On happy news though, weโ€™re back in oreo truffles business! Orders are coming in pretty steady. I do prefer to bake cake and cupcakes but am too lazy to do the costing for those so I havenโ€™t been able to offer them up. Seriously, when I try to do costing, I fall asleep. Itโ€™s happened twice already! My plan to sell at the payday bazaar was foiled too as there were no food stalls last weekend, and for the rest of this month. What a bummer.

Ooohh, have you been Between the Covers lately? I received two new books for review from BookSneeze! (I also just finished a book so a new post will be up soon!)

September 2010 EC and Comments Challenge

My own September comment challenge to myself wasn’t very successful this. In August, I left 390 comments around the blogosphere. For September, I only did 133, only 13% to goal ๐Ÿ™ This seems to be reflective of the fact that I haven’t been online as much. Today, it will be the start of a new countdown (a new ticker will be up shortly). How many meaningful comments can I leave on other people’s blogs this October? We’ll see.

As for the Top Commenter on Where the Moon Shines (that’s my blog, in case you forgot), it is no other than the lovely Gee!

Thank you so much for leaving insightful comments girl! ๐Ÿ™‚ A close second was Ivy, thanks too! ๐Ÿ™‚

And now it is time to pay tribute to my Top Entrecard Droppers for September. Once again, thanks for the traffic and the interaction! It’s nice to see new avatars in this line up too.

I still think that quality blogs stand up on their own, but interaction with its audience enriches it all the more. And of course, traffic is usually the gauge for a blog’s success. Again, thank you so much for spending a few minutes visiting this blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

iPad scare!

We had an iPad scare last night. My baby won’t turn on! Alfred thought that the battery probably got drained so he plugged it in. He tried the button a few minutes later but it still won’t come to life. An hour later: still nothing!

Before we left for my friend’s grandmother’s funeral, he tried to plug it into the PC but it still won’t budge. We left it plugged in and came back a few hours later to a still blacked out iPad.

To be honest, I wasn’t panicky even with the thought that our newest toy could have been bricked. Or maybe I just was too busy being bothered by a bad headache to care about anything else. I went to bed. Next thing I know, I’d open my eyes and there was Alfred watching a movie on my padI!

So what went wrong? We don’t really know. Alfred did find a forum post somewhere describing the same symptoms. It wasn’t any real cause for worry, and you can reboot the system by pressing the two power buttons for 30 seconds, simultaneously. Oh well.

Maybe I wasn’t panicky because there was no reason to worry after all ๐Ÿ™‚

Meanwhile, I read Further Tales of the City this week. Read about it at In Between the Covers.
