Friendship Party!

When I was a kid, it was the Christmas Cartoons on daytime TV, that ushered in the holiday mood. Then it was Christmas parties. When the parties started, whether at school or at my parents’ offices, it was definitely Christmas!

As I got older, shopping for gifts became the spark. Whether I was doing the shopping for my parents, or buying my own gifts for friends, I loved it!

Shopping was still the signal when I already started working. But it wasn’t until after the Christmas party that I could begin to relax and just enjoy the holidays. Almost two weeks of vacation was a welcome break.

Then I shifted careers and I could no longer have a real Christmas break. Fortunately though I had shifts that allowed me to still celebrate with the family. In recent years, I’ve stayed away from Christmas shopping. I feel bad because the task goes back to my parents and at their age, it could be tiring! Hehe. Next year, I promise I’ll be fit to do my own rounds of holiday gift-shopping for the family, not just for my own gifting.

This year, Christmas, just like my shopping, started quite late. The defining kick off to my long weekend was the Friendship Christmas Party with my work friends late in the evening of the 23rd. We started at midnight, five hours later than intended, and we were still up and about eight hours later. We probably could have stayed longer if it wasn’t already Christmas Eve and families weren’t expecting us. Haha!

It was crazy! I was on shift the night before and only had two hours of sleep before I headed out to do last minute shopping. Right from shopping, it was straight to the shower, and then I drove off to meet up with the gang. It took us a few more hours before finally reaching Minette’s house, not because it was far, but because we had errands to take care of on the way.

When we finally got there, we waited some more. Food was first priority, then drinking, gift-giving, then finally, Videoke! Each of us gave 50 pesos for pot money for a Videoke Challenge, and I won! Just before the sun went up, I won! Haha Smile

As a result, I barely had voice the next day. I also had quite the hangover. SmileBut it was all fun. Hope this is the start of a new Christmas tradition. The thing with work friendships is that they end when people move up or move on, I hope this one doesn’t.

Anyhoo, Ric (in green) was the designated photographer. Here are my favorite group shots from the bunch he took:

I have yet to transfer photos from the family Noche Buena and Christmas Lunch so I’m not done with Christmas just yet. But I will have to go back to work tonight after four days off. Not too excited, but not dreading it either. Know what I mean? My brother’s small family is here until at least after the New Year, so having Amir around is sure to keep us filled with Holiday cheer indefinitely. So working or not, the holidays aren’t over. Smile

What ushers in the Christmas holidays for you?

Gifts 2012: Digital Project Life

It’s been YEARS since I gave anything to my best bud Jo. I didn’t even get her anything for her wedding. Not a very good friend, am I? (You’ll remember Jo from this post, my pretty BFF) She currently lives with her husband and their son in the deserts of Dubai (so far!).

This year, I so wanted to give her something for Christmas. I also wanted to give her baby boy a gift and I felt bad NOT shipping out anything when he was born. It would be nice for him to get something from his Auntie Vera all the way from the Philippines, hehe (feeling!). But I couldn’t decide what to get them.

Then I thought about this photo collage, one among many that Jo started sharing in Facebook as soon as the little guy was born:

kenzie

This collage is basic digital scrapbooking! (And isn’t Kenzie just such a charmer even as a newborn?)

What better gift can a Project Life fan/stalker like me give a friend, than a gift of Digital Project Life? I asked her if she would be interested, and she said yes!

So today, I went shopping! I got her the Digital Project Life Class from Jessica Sprague:

and, the Project Life Baby Edition for Him Full Collection from ACDigitals:

I am excited to see what she creates with these!

Nurturing Family Bonds

All over the blogosphere, bloggers have posted a prayer, or a quiet post in lieu of their regular publishing routines. All are remembering, and uniting with the citizens of Sandy Hook as they mourn the loss of 20 children and 7 adults in a senseless shooting.

In prayer, I join them.

I have been thinking about the kids, and their families a lot over the weekend. I can’t imagine where the town starts picking up the pieces of their shattered neighborhood. Then today I got to see the movie My Girl (and My Girl 2). I cried (again) when Vada was told of Thomas J’s death. And then again when she finally emerged from her room to take a look at the body of her best friend lying in his small coffin.

I felt so much empathy for a character in a movie, what more for real live people?

But more than empathy, I guess the only real way for America to move on from yet another tragedy like this, is for real change to happen. What is it in their culture (and maybe laws) that allows for such shootings to happen? This isn’t the first time it happened, how can they ensure it’s the last time? I know it’s a tall order to say that it will never happen again, but where else will parents and kids find peace of mind? How will they ever again feel safe in their classrooms?

But all that aside… what has this event taught us? Those of us halfway around the world, what have we learned? More than anything else it has taught me to appreciate the every day, to keep loved ones close. More than ever, I want to really be serious about documenting our lives because you just can’t know when something would happen. We pray everyday that all will be safe, and we take precautions, but we can’t really predict when something happens.

As for my family, I think it’s important to have an extra happy Christmas this year. This will be the first Christmas without our Papa – Bonifacio, the Hero. So earlier this month I created a group for the family in Facebook to start the boll rolling in planning for the festivities.

Minute to Win It!

Over the years we’ve tried playing several different games. Some are for kids only, but others were so that adults had joined in the fun too. This year, maybe we’ll try a Minute to Win It theme.

We also did Bingo! one time complete with small prizes for each round. It might be a good idea to have that again this year, but I’d have to buy a Bingo! set to pull it off. We will also need to be more creative about it to make it half as interesting as say, just playing online at FoxyBingo.

Whatever games we come up with, it will all mean the same though: another fun night with the family. Celebrating another Christmas, celebrating each other.

Gift Shopping List

Who is done with their Christmas shopping?

How did you ever manage to do it so early?

So far, at 17 days before Christmas, I’ve only crossed six people off my list. I purchased the gifts for these six friends online. I first saw the gift and felt that it was perfect for my friends. When they were delivered, they came all together in this beautiful box:

I will have to make them their own little bags for gifting. I’m excited for that too.

Last year the first set of people I got gifts for were my TLs. This year, I still have no idea what to get them. The boyfriend has hinted on wanting another G-shock, but I’m thinking of deviating from our practice and surprise him with something else instead. With what with exactly, I still don’t know.

It’s not like I can get him, my brother, or dad, a cigar humidor each. The boyfriend needs to stop smoking, my brother is now on e-cigarettes, and my Dad hasn’t smoked in a long time.

And what about Mom? Or our growing boy Amir? Hmmm. This is a very conservative list and already I don’t know how to complete my gifting! Hehe Smile
