Grumpy Old Men

I never really though it would be fun to watch two old men bickering at each other. And an even older man joking too much about sex. I must admit though, this one was quite fun. Younger people usually see old people as boring, quiet ones, and this movie serves to remind us that they are not. Sometimes they even have more fun than we do. Old Gustafson was so funny, 90-year old grandpa was still referring to his son (in his 70s) as Kid!

I saw this movie on HBO the other night while Alfred was working on my computer. It certainly kept me awake. I’m looking for a DVD to borrow or maybe I’ll check if Surf the Channel has it, I want to watch it again because the HBO version either had cuts, or I wasn’t paying attention in some parts.

I couldn’t help but stare at Ann-Margret, she sure is hot isn’t she? I can only hope to age as gracefully as she has. My mom is approaching 60 but she doesn’t look her age. She really looks very young. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to have that and Ann-Margret’s appeal when I reach that age too. Haha, wishful thinking on my part.

I heard Ann-Margret, and later Jack Lemmon, utter one of our favorite quotes: “The greatest regrets in life are the risks we didn’t take.” Ann-Margret said this to Jack Lemmon when he was trying to get rid of her. He, in turn, used this line to his daughter (played by Daryl Hannah) on Christmas Eve when he was disappointed when she had apparently gotten back together with her good-for-nothing husband. I want to listen closely to those parts again because I didn’t quite catch what they both said right after this line.

As you know, I’ve never experienced snow and there’s heaps and heaps of it in this movie. I have heard of ice fishing before, but I had no idea it was anything like that! I mean, the place itself – the little shacks and their fishing holes.

Anyway, if you’ve seen this movie too, tell me what you thought of it. And if you’re a movie, or a book fan, go on to the BAM HQ and find out what others are watching or reading 🙂

Wow Magic Sing!

We’ve been talking about it and we had even decided before that Mom was going to get one in exchange for her Credit Card rewards, but it was only today that the plan finally fell through – we are proud owners of a Wow Magic Sing Concerto Edition sing-a-long system! Wahaha 🙂

If you are Pinoy or if you know someone who has Pinoy in his blood, then you know what this Magic Sing is all about. It’s a “magic mic” that you can plug in to your TV or Home Entertainment System. It has it’s own library of songs (I think this one has 2000) and it also has a built-in scoring system – Karaoke style!

You don’t need to memorize the lyrics, or the tune/melody, because there’s a guide for you. Yes, remember the follow-the-whatever-object-flies-around-over-the-words/lyrics in the Looney Tunes shows of old? It’s a lot like that.

Videokes are now not just found in night clubs, or in gatherings/celebrations. You will find one in many street corners, in the mall, in gaming arcades. They are all over. And always, you will always find someone willing to belt it out.

My family is no exemption. Although we do prefer to do so in the confines of our small compound here. 😉

The Magic Mics (there’s two in the set) had to wait until just before midnight before I could take them out of their box. We had dinner downstairs for my niece Hanna’s ninth birthday and I lingered there to chitchat with my cousins some more. When I finally came home, my brother was about to leave for work, my Dad was already fast asleep, and my Mom was the only one left still up.

I didn’t wait to be told twice to checkout our latest toy. I opened it up, read enough of the manual to know how to set it up properly. And then there I was singing.

I scored 74 for the first song – WHAT?! Haha. But for the rest of the time, I got this:

Yup – I’m an excellent singer. Haha! 🙂 My Mom didn’t sing tonight but she sat through several songs before she turned in for the night. She must have told my Dad what I was doing because he actually came downstairs to check it out. Of course I let him have the mic for two Beatles songs. Yeah, just two. I gave myself an hour to enjoy singing (with the TV volume turned down to avoid waking the neighbors) but my concert actually ran for two hours! Fun 🙂

Now we wouldn’t have to spend additional money to rent Videoke systems for our Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve gatherings. We would need amplifiers and loud speakers to still be able to compete with neighbors on the other side of the creek though. Hehe.

Eraserheads forever!

The band that we so loved since gradeschool is back in the headlines.

When I first heard the buzz about an Eraserheads reunion concert, I was thrilled. It shook the Pinoy Rock scene when front man (and my ultimate crush) Ely Buendia announced that he was leaving the band, many years ago. The remaining three members, Raimund, Marcus, and Buddy, decided to continue and even enlisted a new vocalist – a girl. That was shortlived though, because the Eraserheads would never be the same without Ely.

Then the news died down, I never really knew whether there was going to be one or not. Two days ago, I was shocked to learn that the concert was slated for Saturday, August 30. Shoot. I won’t see them. The most awaited reunion concert, and I was not going to witness it.

So I was sulking last night. And it didn’t help that Alfred couldn’t care less. He’s not a big E-heads fan, you see. He would go see Sandwich play (which former E-head Raimund now fronts) but he couldn’t care less about the band that started it all. He even had the gall to tell me that it was fortunate that I had missed it because the concert was cut short.

My first reaction was, where’s your humanity dude? We’re talking about a person who possibly had a heart attack! And not just some person either – it’s Ely Buendia for pete’s sake! It is alarming news, specially because he had already undergone a heart operation just last year.

When I heard about what happened (that was also the first thing my mom and dad told me when I woke up this morning), I felt all the more that I should have been there with the other 60,000 fans. I don’t care if they didn’t finish the concert, the thought that it could really have been the last time I’d see them play together…

Anyhoo. Ely’s at the Philippine Heart Center, but is already in a stable condition. His fans are all praying for his fast recovery. His mom died on the 28th, but the true rock icon that he is, the show must go on. Imagine the stress that he was under. But the people who were at the concert say that the band still performed well together, and they don’t feel that they were shortchanged. They got 15 songs anyway! That’s not too bad at all.

Hopefully they’d give in to the fans and perform again when Ely is fully recovered. I’d definitely won’t miss it.

A Very Special Love

On Monday, I met Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro from the film A Very Special Love. It was a hoot! Alfred and I found so many reasons to laugh, and just enjoy the kilig moments the movie offered.

Laida’s character reminds me of Jane, played by Katherine Heigl in 27 dresses. Like Jane, Laida is selfless, and is head over heels for her boss. Laida is not obsessed with weddings though, but she is in perpetual good mood.

In college, Laida and her classmates had an interview with Miggy, a young scion of a prominent family. She was captivated by the man and has had a crush ever since. His pictures adorn her bedroom wall and she sought out to apply as an Editorial Assistant in his small publishing firm. As fate would have it, the publishing firm, Flippage, would be needing new people ASAP as the EIC and other staff had just resigned due to conflicts with the big boss. Laida gets hired on the spot, without so much as an interview.

Scrapbook Saturday – #3: Journey

Scrapbook Saturday

Here I am, posting my first on-time Scrapbook Saturday. Woohoo! (Click on the button to go to the SS Headquarters)

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that this was going to be different from my previous entries. This is the first time I am ever scrapping a layout inspired by a movie that Alfred and I went to see. (Click the image to read the journalling)

Wish I had thought about doing this a long time ago. If I had, I’d have a huge album filled with movie layouts from those we went to on our first year dating. I just hope that this is something that I’d be able to continue doing – scrapping what each movie meant to me, or whatever it had me thinking, or feeling. Or who I saw it with.

I hope you liked it. Please do visit other SS participants, okay? 🙂
