Ramblings and Brain farts

Downtime

My PC is down. It’s a sad day.

It’s been sick for a while now, we’ve just really been stretching it to its limits. I guess that today, it just finally gave out.

And boyfriend and I had a fight and it was indirectly a factor to it. Haha.

I am using Alfred’s laptop just to get my daily dose of blogging and whatever browsing I could think of. He said that he really left his laptop here so I could use it tonight. We are currently messaging each other about what he can try tomorrow to fix the PC, or if we should just wait til we get the new parts to completely overhaul it.

Singing birds in the background

Mom and Dad went to the Lung Center Sunday Market yesterday and came home with 2 pairs of birds. They are cute little ones but they forgot to ask what kind of birds these are. Alfred says they’re society finches but he’s not sure.

They sure are playful and very chirpy! Watch them flying about and listen to their singing for yourself. Here’s a video I took just now:

Yesterday, Zune appeared like he was very welcoming and enjoyed just watching them. When we finally hung the cage where he can’t really see the birds, he kept jumping/reaching up. This morning my dad moved the cage, then I think Zune decided he didn’t want them around. He kept barking at the cage! Stop terrorizing the small ‘uns honey!Laughing 10

Visiting San Benissa

I’m not sure why I didn’t take pictures. The camera was sitting in my bag the whole time.

My parents and I, and then later my brother and his girlfriend, went to San Benissa Garden Villas for the orientation for condo owners in the new community. It’s the property that I am now proud owner of. Oh okay, it isn’t fully mine but I am paying for it. My brother and I own a unit each and we both took out loans for it that we pay for monthly.

The units have been ready for months, we just haven’t had the chance to take care of it. We will either live in it, or rent it out. Either way, we would need to fix it up. My bro, who is far more thrifty than I am, can afford to spruce it up. I can’t.

I’ve found one reason not to move in myself: no dogs allowed. What?!

They said that they would allow visits, but the dog has to be carried to the unit and can stay for long. If we took Zune there and walked him through the streets for his daily walks – they would have us reported. Tsk. Dad says they’ll just bring Zune to us from time to time, and we could also visit him here. No. I don’t think so.

SM Biodegradable Plastic Bags

One night, alone in my bed, I couldn’t sleep. My mind was working overdrive. My attention was somehow directed to the trashbag we had hanging by the doorknob of my bedroom. It was an SM shopping bag and I was puzzled by what was written at the bottom: BIODEGRADABLE.

I was itching to turn Alfred’s laptop on and do some research right there and then. But I had already turned off the wifi router downstairs and I really didn’t want to make myself up more by walking all the way down and then up again. So I decided to leave it until the next day.

I forgot all about it though. The next day, I wracked my brain for what I wanted to research but couldn’t remember what it was. Today, I saw three or four blue SM plastic shopping bags on a chair – obviously my parents went shopping on Sunday afternoon. Then I saw it again: BIODEGRADABLE.

Was it possible? I asked Alfred. We finally looked it up.

I am disappointed that there is not much press about SM’s – the largest shopping mail chain in the Philippines – initiatives like this. I mean, they should totally use it in their advertising. Here’s one story I found on Google. And there are a lot of shoppers who blogged about this too. They have photos posted as well, which is what kept me from posting my own photo of the bag. Haha.

BUT. There seems to be a question of proper disposal still.

On the Wikipedia entry on Biodegradable Plastics, it says

Proper composting methods are required to efficiently degrade the plastic, which may actually contribute to carbon dioxide emissions.”

Okay, I’d really like to know more about bioplastics and the proper disposal of such. Like, would it better if we use the SM bags to line our trash cans or would that mean it would also end up in landfills and would still not be decomposed as fast as literature says it should? I’d rather not research much on it right now though. At least not now. So if you have any useful links that can tell me more about this, be sure to send it over?

I appreciate that SM is taking steps to address the problem of environmental degradation, at no obvious added cost for the consumers. Maybe Robinson’s and Ayala Malls will follow suit? They should also encourage buyers to bring their own reusable bags.
