Walk home, Vera

Finally, I have done it.

Walk home from work, that is. 🙂

Lord knows how many times I had thought of stopping and hailing a cab to take me the rest of the way home, but I had to push myself to plod on. That it would be so worth it, in time. It must have taken 3000 steps or so. It doesn’t sound much, I know. But that is a good way to start me off on having any physical activity incorporated into my day.

Why’d I do it?

Because on Saturday morning, Alfred and I walked from ABS-CBN to Morato. That isn’t too far, but we both broke a sweat. For overweight people like us whose physical activity consists only of walking to the cab, from the cab, in and out and up and down the house, that was already a lot of walking. We hadn’t had breakfast when we did that, so we were quite hungry too. We passed by several breakfast places and considered stopping right there but we didn’t. We agreed that we would walk all the way to Kopi Roti, break fast there, then walk the remaining distance home (Kopi Roti was probably half or a third of the way through).

So I had coffee, two slices of french toast and shared a Kopi Bun with the boyfriend, while he ordered hot choco and toast. I’d already consider that light breakfast. It was there that we decided to see a movie, but not after walking a bit more. We left the cafe at around 9AM and walked around the Scout area. I snapped a few photos too, and I even tripped (ouch!). We hailed a cab upon reaching Scout Reyes and went on our way to Greenhills. Yucky right? We didn’t even go back home to change out of our sweaty clothes? To be quite frank, we didn’t sweat all that much, we started very early so there was hardly any sun, and there was a cool wind blowing too. We sweated, but we didn’t stink. Haha.

Besides, to go home would just break the momentum 🙂

Another good thing that came out from Saturday’s walk was that it gave us another way to bond with each other. You can never have too much bonding naman right? Now, if I can just convince the boyfriend on the benefits of doing this more regularly…

Here’s a photo from Google Earth of the route we took from ELJ to Kopi Roti:

Checkout the few photos I snapped from Saturday, over at my new photo blog!

Anyhoo, today, I took a slightly different route today. I went through Scout Borromeo, Timog, and then Scout Tobias. I even passed by the intersection where I tripped on Saturday!

My legs weren’t sore when I finally arrived home. But they were too hot, I was wearing jeans see. I don’t think I’d be up to taking a huge bag of clothes to change into everyday. One step at a time.

If I keep up with this, I can lose weight without spending any additional money on weight loss products. I also wouldn’t need to be on the never ending search for diet pills that work. In fact, I can save at least 55 pesos for the fare I would have paid a cabbie to take me home!

And I Love You So

We had no intentions to go out and see a movie yesterday. But we did, and we had a good time.

I was teary-eyed at several points in the movie, and so was my big chuck of a boyfriend! Haha. I hope to never have to go through such pain. Seriously.

I plan to scrap a page for this but hadn’t done any until now. Maybe tomorrow I can get down to it. Maybe.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned Scour.com before in this blog and I don’t even remember how long ago I started using it as my default search engine. I used to have another service that allows me to earn very little money for every search I did, but I noticed that my earnings didn’t budge after several days! Anyway, so I switched to Scour.com. I actually don’t remember how to earn more points, and how much each point converts to, but I just use it regularly for searching about stuff.

I used it to search for the keywords I was given for an article writing gig. I searched for images thru the service, and even looked up moving companies San Francisco. More recently though, I searched for WP themes again.

I found a new theme that’s got me deciding to relaunch a photo blog. It’s on http://verabear.net/digitalmemories but it ain’t ready yet.

Help send me to Photography Class!

I am doing something I don’t think I’ve ever done anything before. I am asking for donations.

But it isn’t for any cause or charity. It is something that will benefit me, and well, you too. Wouldn’t you like to see me post even better photos?

Well the gang at JessicaSprague.Com is celebrating their second anniversary in DigiLand.  And one of the surprises announced today is a special summer offering of one of their online classes that I’d been anticipating:Candice Stringham’s Oh Shoot! Beginning Digital SLR Photography class.  I’ve wanted to sign up for this class since I saw it on their store, but I just couldn’t justify the costs. But now… I really really want this.  There are other classes available here that I can physically attend, and would cost a little less (though with transpo and food expense, maybe it will cost more after all). But if you read her class description, you’d understand why I want to sign up.

The thing is, the registration will open in a few days and I only have about 70 USD in my Paypal account, and the class costs 126 USD. So what I’m asking is — could you help me make up the difference? Please? I don’t know if anyone will actually donate, but it wouldn’t hurt me to try would it? Click on the button to donate! 🙂 And don’t forget to leave a note so I can thank you properly 🙂

*The Paypal website seems to be having problems. If so and the button above doesn’t work, please try to send your donations to verabear (at) msn.com. Thanks again!

Ohhh… I almost forgot about posting pictures! I decided to join in for a picture meme called You Capture:

This week’s theme is SUMMER.

It’s my favorite time of year.

First off – our beach side photo from Baler. My niece Hannah snapped this for us at around 8 in the morning.

Later that morning, we hopped on a tricycle, just the boyfriend and I and we were taken to this wonderful place. The water was so cold! A welcome respite to the heat of summer.  This is about 45 minutes away from the beach.

This boy was with us in the trip. He’s the son of one of my childhood friends! Isn’t he cute? He loved swimming in the kiddie pool at the resort!

Summers are the perfect reason for team outings. And what are summers if not for goofing around?

The boyfriend and my nephew Esban are perfect companions for outings like this!

Every summer we realize how fearless E becomes when in the water. Because he knows how to swim now, he wasn’t afraid of tackling the slide! Alfred was waiting to catch him of course. Hehe

And here’s one more photo from Summer of 2009:

Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center – Part 2

(Read the first part of this series on our Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife experience here)

Apart from being a park where families can go to relax, unwind, have a picnic and enjoy nature in the middle of a bustling city, the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife is also a Nature Center.  What this means is that rescued animals are nursed here until they can be set free again.  For those who can no longer be brought back to their natural habitat, they stay in the center and those are the animals that people like us can visit.

I have memories of entering an aviary as a young girl.  A big one where you can see the birds flying around you.  I still can’t be quite sure if this is a memory from a trip to the Wildlife or to Nayong Pilipino ( is there an aviary there?).  I don’t know how many species of birds can be found at the Wildlife, I can’t even name the birds that we were able to see.  The cages are not properly labeled you see.

I was quite frustrated though that the cages completely ruin your chances of a good shot.  The animals are in cages, then there are railings that keep you more than an arm’s length away from the cage itself.  For a frustrated photographer like me, there’s just too many challenges to think of. Haha 🙂 Nevertheless, blogging about our day at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife will not be complete without showing photos of the animals we were there to see.

Sheesh please do not ask me what these birds are called. I’d just tell you that they look like African lovebirds to me. You don’t agree? Well here they are kissing!

kissing-at-cage-27-wildlife

There you go, kissing scandal at Cage 27.  See, no labels at all to tell you what you’re looking at!  So even if I wanted to educate Esban on what birds these are, I couldn’t!

According to the boyfriend (who wanted to become a veterinarian, if not for his fear of blood), the birds on this next set are sea hawks.  The last one I’m sure is a hornbill. Or something. 🙂

Now this majestic peacock was kind enough to hold his pose for me.  But what caught our attention more than his magnificent stance and the beauty of his feathers, was the fact that he shares his cage with turtles.  Ya don’t believe me? Well see for yourself! We even photographed one turtle struggling to get out of his water bath 🙂

Didja see it? 😉

Stay tuned for Part 3 🙂

The Sizzling Pepper Steak

Can you guess what this is? You’d probably know what it is if you’ve already been to the Sizzling Pepper Steak at Trinoma.  If you don’t know what it is, well…

may-4747

Last night was the first time we had dinner at this place and both Alfred and I agree that it was a good experience.  You don’t have to be worried on your first time there, they have a TV that plays demos of how to eat their bestselling dishes served on hot plates.  No, I am not kidding 🙂

The food is served on hot plates, with paper walls shielding the customer from the smoke that’s coming off sizzling meat:

The waitress told me to flip the beef cutlets (I ordered Gyu Saikoro) so that it can be cooked evenly, but I had to take photos and forgot to flip them at the right moment. I thought for sure the meat won’t be well done just the way I like ’em, but surprisingly, they were cooked just right. And I cannot believe how tender the meat was.  As in, like it could melt in your mouth. Haha 🙂

gyu-saikoro-pepper-steak

It is served with mongo sprouts, a few slices of carrots and baguio beans on the side.  There’s also a sauce to glaze the meat. It kinda tastes like Tokyo Tokyo’s Beef Mizono, but not really.  Basta, I liked it 🙂  If you want rice to go with your meal though, you’d have to order it separately. I didn’t. What I got instead, was this yummy Chicken Salad.

chicken-salad-pepper-steak

We ordered the salad as an after thought, but we were so glad that we did. It is both sweet and salty; the chicken was very tasty.  It’s chicken salad with nuts on top of lettuce, ripe mango slices, grapes, and tomatoes – with yummy sauce. Ugh. LOVE.

Tiramisu was up for dessert, and it was the single disappointing part of the meal.  I don’t think Tiramisu is meant to be frozen delight is it? In my mind Tiramisu is meant to be soft, and even wet. I’m guessing they stored the pan in a freezer, but it didn’t thaw enough before serving. So when you try to get a spoonful you get stuck at one layer… Oh well…

So Alfred and I discussed our eating habits, and how we could actually just order food to share the next time we dine there. We’d definitely get the chicken salad again.  On a more serious note though we should really change our eating habits because even the best diet supplements won’t be able to help us lose weight! Wahaha 🙂

Oh before I forget, so what’s on the first photo? Exhaust vents! They have a lot of those over the tables all around the restaurant. While we were being seated, the waitress warned us not to bump our heads on the exhausts. Alfred and I both reacted – that’s what it is! 🙂  Unluckily for the guy who sat on the table next to us, he hit one of these babies real hard. As in.
