Empty Chairs and Empty Tables

Lea Salonga, Pinoy Pride, sang Marius’ song from Les Miserables in her recent guesting in Good Day New York at Fox 5 News.

She played Eponine and later, Fantine in Les Miz but she is still best loved for her portrayal as Kim in Miss Saigon.

Don’t you love her rendition of Empty Chairs and Empty Tables? I actually felt for that scene in the movie (just saw it on Monday night). Dama ko sya, for some reason.

Sigh. I so loved the musical and still wish I can get to see it onstage. But I was looking for more details that I read in the book. Oh well, maybe I’ll write more about my thoughts of the movie later on.

Unlimited LTE from Globe

Yesterday, I saw this photo on my Facebook News Feed:

lte

My friend (@koyat61205 on Instagram) says she just updated to iOS 6.1 and this became available. I thought that a special SIM was required, but apparently the nano-sim that Globe issued its postpaid subscribers with the iPhone 5 should already be LTE ready.

Thanks to Yugatech, I also learned that subscribers to the UnliSurf plan can get LTE on our iPhone 5 as long as we’re in an LTE covered area. Now where that areas are, remains to be the question. I really have been mostly happy with Globe, having been a subscriber for over 13 years, but their Customer Service is crappy. Others have been having a difficult time getting 3G signal.

I have yet to update my iOS devices but when I do, I’m looking forward to faster no cap Internet. Smile

Coca-Cola and Obesity

This ad isn’t shown in the Philippines, I guess because the program is currently only in the US. But it is of interest to me because I drink Coke and I am obese.

Some time ago (I completely forgot when that was) I signed up at the health site Calorie Count (and I even downloaded the free iPhone app). Although I haven’t fully maximized the abundance of information (and support) available from that community to kick off my own wellness plan, I do pick up on articles they post thru their newsletters. Today, it included a post on Coca-Cola’s Anti-Obesity Ad.

Put on those headphones, and watch this short video:

What do you think?

I think that when big corporations (and don’t forget politicians) spend money (or risk losing some profit) for the greater good – that’s a good thing. And that we shouldn’t be so blind not to see that their special projects could also be self-serving – a PR job, a way to look good for the cameras, or a conscience-cleansing effort. But they still deserve support – or acknowledgment at the very least. After all, when more people join in to fight for a cause, whatever cause it may be, it’s a step closer to the goal.

What I’m saying is, good job Coca-Cola for owning up to your role in making the world obese and taking steps to reduce that – no matter how small the steps. But I’m pretty sure you will not completely take your sugary products off the market. That would be suicide.

On the YouTube page for the ad, there are mixed reactions. Some people talk about other sins of the company. It’s like saying ‘I will not accept nor applaud your help here and right now because I cannot accept your other actions elsewhere.’ It’s like Sting changing the venue of his Philippine concert because the SM MOA Arena is affiliated with tree-cutting SM Baguio. Know what I mean?

So in the end, it’s still up to us to choose the better options. 0 cal or 140 cal? Zero or regular Coke? Soda or water? It’s not just Coke’s fault that I need to lose about ninety to a hundred pounds, but drinking Coke was probably a big contributor. And yes, I have ingested way more calories than I burn. I didn’t need a Coca-Cola ad to tell me that. But knowing that they are putting money into the fight against obesity? Now that’s cool.

But you know what, maybe learning about why other people boycott Coke would help turn me off of it completely. Hah! That would be the day. Happiness nga eh.

Sample Room

When I first heard about Sample Room, I didn't get excited. I thought it was just like the BDJ Box where you take out a monthly subscription to receive a box of beauty samples. I was wrong. Whereas the BDJ Box wasn't a fit for a non-beauty product junkie like me, Sample Room is actually a good fit for the kikay in me that's interested in taking care of herself better this 2013. 🙂

My first order arrived a few days after payment confirmation. It came in pretty little brown packaging.

In batches, product samples are posted On the website and members can request any or all if them, in exchange for points. New signups are awarded 100 points. if you want to order a lot of samples and your points aren't enough, you can buy more points.
This first order isn't really for me, it's a LAB Series sampler for men. Alfred was the one who sampled it.

The boyfriend immediately tried it. He reported that it felt good to the skin, and there was no tingling or itchiness felt after use. His only complaint though is that these were very smal. Ha!
A few days after using the products, I posted a review on Sample Room on the boyfriend's behalf. By doing so, I was awarded 1 extra point. Then upon approval of my review, I got all 80 points back from the order. Neat! Of course, I used my points to get more samples – AHAVA products that arrived today! Will try them very soon!
So, without a doubt, I am loving Sample Room! 🙂

December Roundup

14 days into the new year and I have yet to give a shout out for the events/things/people/etc that made my December 2012 amazing. I guess I have been putting it off because that month didn’t take off so well, as I mentioned on my November 2012 sendoff post. But towards the last two weeks of the month, things picked up and all was well again. Smile

Thank you for:

  • > The two Christmas parties I got to attend – the official company Christmas bash at the PICC, and the Friendship Christmas Party that was SO. MUCH. FUN. Two parties. I missed the YP Christmas Party for the second straight year (a gathering with friends from ECPAT/YP-ACSEC).
  • > Having spent a LOT of time with my family. My parents had full two weeks (or was it more?) of holidays, and my brother’s family was here the whole time. We got to spend the holidays with Amir! That was definitely the highlight of the month, if not of the year!
  • And I am so so proud of my nephew. He recognizes shapes and numbers, and a lot of things! He sat down to flip through this magazine and pointed out cars and buildings (which he calls towers). Also in the photo are the small transport-themed toys Alfred and I got him for his birthday. Smile
  • > Unexpected gifts! A pair of earrings is among the favorites! But the biggest one came from the boyfriend, he got me an iPhone5! Woot! SmileI so love my new phone.
  • > iPad Mini – I got this for myself. It’s engraved too: Live. Capture Life. Tell Stories. Then my blog URLs are there too. I’ve used it to blog twice so far, and it was a smooth experience. I’ll be using it more and more.
  • > My new godson! Andrei, baby boy of my good friend Mayeen, was Christened on December 2. Hope to see a lot of you, and soon!
  • > Amigurumi class! I made my first two Amigurumis after attending a class at CraftMNL. Here’s the red kitten I started during the workshop:
  • > Another “Start” at work. I was transferred to a new LOB in mid December and it’s been a smooth ride so far. Things are challenging, but not hopeless.

I’m pretty sure there are so much more I should be thankful for in December. But these are just among the few that stand out.

Perhaps it’s fitting to end with a very short prayer: “Lord, thank you for all the blessings that you have bestowed on us in the past year. Many times I have dwelled on what was missing, when I really should have focused on the fact that you have given plenty. Thank you for continuing to guide us as we navigate thru life. We can only hope to be the best stewards of Your creation, and we shall be mindful of that charge in all our days. Father, please continue to extend your patience, and keep on guiding me, until all Your plans for me are realized. Again, thank you. Forever, thank you. Amen.”
