Wil’s Steaktown

Tuesday was payday and I asked the boyfriend out to lunch. I told him I’d pay for anything but he couldn’t decide where to go. We settled on an old favorite: Steaktown.

My family has gone to Steaktown for family dinners since I was a kid. It used to be located along West Avenue, then it moved. Next we knew, it was along Quezon Avenue side by side another local restaurant. They served the same meals we had known and loved. I took the boyfriend there a few times and we celebrated some of our anniversaries in that restaurant. They moved again, this time to a more secluded spot, at Sgt. Esguerra. In that last location the restaurant upgraded its look. But the menu still carried the same old familiar fare. They still had the salad bar too.

We were looking forward to a nice Steaktown lunch to kick off Alfred’s birthday week.

Imagine our surprise when upon entering, we found the place to be different. Everything was changed. The biggest surprise of all?

It is now known as Wil’s Steaktown.

Willie Revillame bought the business. And the entire building it was on apparently. The place was being renovated into Wil’s Events Place. It’s also now a resto/bar where a band plays at night. They don’t just serve steaks now. Imagine my surprise when I saw Kare-kare on the menu. Good thing for Alfred though because that’s what he actually wanted for lunch that day.

Now Wil isn’t on my list of favorite people, and the last thing I wanted to do was to make him richer by patronizing his products. But we were there already and the serving staff were nice enough. So we stayed. It was also very hot outside and I’d rather not go out right away.

They served this very soft bread for starters. I actually wanted more. They offered more but didn’t get to actually serve it. I guess that was okay because I got stuffed with all the food we ordered anyway.

We don’t normally order appetizers, but I’m happy we ordered these potatoes. They’re baked and stuffed with sour cream, cheese and bacon. I think it was called Boston Potatoes or something. Hah!

The big bowl of Kare-Kare was supposed to have Ox tail. I’m not sure that’s what was in it. It also wasn’t very special, but it tasted okay.

It took me a long time to decide what to order because I wanted something to complement the Kare-Kare. But since I couldn’t choose any, I settled on Jesse James steak. That used to be Alfred’s usual order. Actually he was looking forward to ordering the 1 pound steak, but it is no longer on the menu.

My steak was well done and was served with garlic mushrooms and buttered vegetables. I had rice too.

We had refillable Tanglad Iced Tea that we actually regret ordering. It costs 150 pesos a glass and the boyfriend didn’t like it so much. It was too spicy for him, for a drink. I liked it, but couldn’t drink too much of it. A glass would have been enough.

Though we were quite aware of our running bill already, we decided to have dessert.

Alfred ordered the frozen Leche (I did not write down the actual names, sorry), which is a lot like Brazo de Mercedes, but frozen.

I got the Mango Torte, which is very similar to Contis’ Mango Bravo minus the layers.

We ended up with a very hefty bill. The food was okay, but the cost is a big consideration. Because of it, we’d already decided that this would be our last visit to Steaktown. Don’t get me wrong, we’re all for paying good money for good food, we just didn’t feel like this was worth it. Add to that, it’s Wil’s restaurant now and no longer the good old familiar place that my family enjoyed.

Pieces of Me (Another Blog Train)

Here’s another freebie blog train for all you digital scrapbookers out there. No big preview though, but all the links to participating designers can be found here: Pieces of Me – DSF Blog Train June 2012.

Love the soft colors of the palette they played with this month:

Not my usual colors, but I like them anyway. Very fresh!

Here’s a tip about blog trains: take the time to say thank you. These designers are very generous. A lot of them make a living out of their designs but they participate in these freebie hops without asking for much in return. The very least we can do is say thank you in the Comments section.

When you do create something from the downloads, let them know. Link them up. I find that a lot of them would really go out of their way to see your layout. It’s a nice way to get some love back too.

Finally, so you don’t get overwhelmed with so much supplies, don’t download everything. No one ever said you had to download everything in a blog train. Although I must say, I took a peek at all the links and pretty much want most of it. Winking smile

Truth is, I’m trying to resolve NOT to download freebies. I hardly ever really do a layout and my stash is a disorganized mess. But I keep getting these freebies. I’ll use them someday, even for Project Life.

Now, probably the best thing to do to avoid downloading is staying away from the trains or from stalking designers. But it’s not just the freebies that I watch out for. I really love looking at all their creations and how they use it. And I love all the inspiration they provide. Some are even windows to even more beautiful things.

A lot of these creative people don’t only do scrapbooking and memory keeping, a lot are into crafts too, or baking and cooking. And someday, I’ll do all of those too. Haha. Anyway, I also recently happened to stumble on a project using Fossil Beads and that was the first time I’ve even heard of those. I guess time and nature really creates the most beautiful of things and each bead is probably unique. Interesting!

“In the Garden” DSC June Blog Train

I don’t really follow the Digiscrap Connect Blog, but I saw the links from Designs by Krista and followed along. There are some very nice papers and elements along the way, so I thought I’d share here in case I still have digiscrapping readers out there who may be interested.

Here’s the preview:

And here’s the link to the beginning of the blog train: http://www.digiscrapconnect.com/?p=265

My favorite pieces are of course from Krista, Ellie Lash, Geniffer Bursett (first time I’d seen her designs actually), and I’m not even done yet! Not sure how long the freebies will be up, so go follow the train soon Smile

Hello, June!

June is among us, seems like May just breezed through.

On the blogging front I’d only made it up to 10 posts for May. Published 5 in Between the Covers. I actually had more posts (18) on The Newbie Photographer but they’re mostly cross-posts with Instagram and only 2 with actual text content. Oh well.

As for the Comments Challenge – I was 9 comments short of the 115 goal. I’d have met it too if I didn’t have to get on an impromptu work trip.

We did go to this beautiful wedding last weekend. A childhood friend got married to her long-time sweetheart in that beautiful church in Sagada. Their 12-year-old son (or is he 13 already?) was their Best Man. I haven’t blogged about it because I’m trying my best not to post any of the photos prematurely. Hehe. But I’m looking forward to sharing them soon.

It was quite tiring but I had so much fun. I think that next time I have a project like it, I’d need endurance training beforehand. Seriously. And the whole wedding just gave you a certain happy vibe, I guess all or most weddings have that. For this one, you kinda expected the groom and his posse to each whip out a macanudo cigar and puff circles of smoke all over. Haha! You would know what I mean when you see the photos.

Anyway, I’m off to get a headstart on my June Comments Challenge, thanks to Paula and the BC Bloggers’ Comments Exchange. Anyone out there want to join my Comments Challenge? Just create your own ticker at Ticker Factory and play along. If there’s more interest maybe we can make a badge too. Smile

Passion

Thanks to BC Bloggers’ Comment Exchange, I came across this post about Blogging: Finding a Niche. She shared this video, which I happen to like too (thanks again!)

Some snippets from the vid:

Pursuing one’s passion. Having so many interests, so many ideas, is a very good place to be. A lot of people are changing their life paths.

What is it that makes my heart sing? What is it that creates value in my life, in other people’s lives?

Step aside and allow ourselves to take action and try things out. Without putting the pressure on being perfect or selecting the right thing.

what we’re doing right now is not the ‘be all, end all.’ It grows, builds, and expands, or it might lead you to something else.

The most important: taking action. Doing. Starting now.

Over time it will reveal itself whether you want to keep on doing it or change.

Fantastic!

She echoes what Rubin also says in The Happiness Project. And she reminds me of why my word for the year is Start.

Last week, we took one big step to see whether we can get something more out of a passion that both the boyfriend and I share: for photography. We still don’t know if we will pursue this. Time will tell.

There are other things I’d like to start and I guess this year won’t be enough to do them all. I’ll just focus on getting through my list – or listing them all for starters. Smile
